The Bugs in My Beard

2026 · In 2012, the first stanza of this poem started rattling around in my head while riding my bike ~60 miles per week. I had a very long beard and picked up lots of hitchhikers.When I was assigned another installment of Lexigraphique for Illustoria № 27: Bugs in 2025, I pitched revisiting the poem. The spread became something else altogether, but it inspired me to finally completing what I had started 13½ years ago.

Global Citizen, 2019 · Global Citizen sat down with Vera’s New Orleans director, Will Snowden, to discuss ending money injustice in New Orleans. The short video that came of that discussion describes how money bail and conviction fines and fees are unnecessary, unlawful, and undermine safety and equity. It points to a better way, set out in Vera’s report, Paid in Full: A Plan to End Money Injustice in New Orleans.

How Global Citizens Helped End Honor Killings in Pakistan

Global Citizen, 2019 · In 2004, Pakistan made it punishable by law to commit murder in the name of defending “honor.” Yet, a loophole in the law still allowed perpetrators of honor killings to evade justice if the family of the victim forgave them, which was a common practice. Girls and women deviating from traditional norms and expectations—including choice of clothing, education, marriage and employment—could incite honor-based murder, oftentimes by their own brothers, father and uncles. By 2016, activists and Global Citizens decided it was time to act.
